The End Of A Time

It’s the end of a time
If I may with a rhyme
Of a time
When we’d ride bikes all through the night

It’s the end of a time
It’s the end of a year
Twelve months have gone by
So slowly gone by
And the end is so near

It’s the end of a time
When we’d lie on the road
Or collapse in the dust
Still with miles to go

It’s the end of a time
We’d be living on beans
Canned tuna, dried peas
When what we wanted was cheese

It’s the end of a time
When the road went on
It was long
But not as long as Matt’s hair

It’s the end of a time
When freedom was ours
And we’d do what we want
‘Cause “Everybody Has Powers”
Six days without showers
And one’s powers turn sour

It’s the end of a time
When we’d enter our tents
And thank God for the vents
For the stench was intense

It’s the end of a time
On the Nullarbor Plain
Forty degrees, no trees
And then it would rain

It’s the end of a time
With cattle running beside
Wild brumbies behind
Kangaroos leaping high
Crocodiles swimming by
Emus watching us ride
Echidnas trying to hide
A giant eagle to guide
And we’d think but not say
“Yes, this is the life”

It’s the end of a time
Built on laughter and smiles
And while a decent smile can keep us happy for miles
Laughter’s better. It’s worth miles and miles of smiles

It’s the end of a time
When bushtucker reigned
Pigface after a surf
Or nitre bush for a change

It’s the end of a time
When our mascots grew big
Young “Pedals” the Avocado
And “Helmut” the Fig

It’s the end of a time
On the red Pilbarra dirt
Climbing hills just to see
The mild curve of the earth

It’s the end of a time
When we’d mend a flat tyre
On the side of the road
Rain, hail, or bushfire

It’s the end of a time
When a word might be heard
That’s forbidden on tour
And 20 push ups occur

It’s the end of a time
When we’d rock up to schools
And the kids think we’re fools
But sustainably cool

It’s the start of a time
Now our leaders can see
Economic growth is the surplus
Of healthy rivers and trees

It’s the end of the tour
It’s the end of these times
And we thank you for reading
This time of our lives
