18th November - EMERALD BEACH

Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson AKA Ross Gordon "Gilligan" Coggan

And they told me at school that "Banjo" passed away on the 5th of February 1941! He’ll live on through his poetry for as long as people like my old man continue to reinvent his Aussie ballads. We loved the words dad, and hope our readers do to – very inspirational for us. Our day today on the other hand was everything but adventurous. We spent the whole time doing admin, admin, and more admin. However, the MyPOWER RETURN FESTIVAL is shaping up to be a massive event.

I think we actually timed our day off the bikes quite well, given that all the dams in the vicinity of Coffs Harbour are now certainly full! We did manage to squeeze in a quick game of juggles between downpours though. Thank you Mary Jane, Harry, Oscar and Rose for having us at your place for the last few days. It has been great to meet you all  - Matt

The urge came upon me
To write a verse or two
About the MyPower journey
And the amazing things they do

The lads left Cronulla, December last year
Young, naïve, determined and true
They harboured no fear
Confident of what they could do

I think many doubted they could do it
Ride 18000 kilometres around this great land
Not even cyclists - they showed amazing grit
They conquered all together as a band

They knew not what was before them
There’s both good and bad in that
They had the highs of great freedom
Some lows that knocked them flat

But nothing could stop them
On their Meri way
In their quest for wisdom
And a better world one day

Anthony was their guardian angel
Driving all the way
There if they stumbled or fell
Ensuring their safety to ride another day

It hasn’t all been hard yakka
They’ve had great fun as well
Seen more than any backpacker
Twice as many yarns to tell

Of excited children in the classroom
Natives in the street
High-powered execs in the boardroom
All kinds they got to meet

Many have been generous and supportive
Others they have not
Some found them too provocative
Others tried to help stop the rot

A whole new vocabulary they now pack
The Dreamie, Ghoul, Spoof to name a few
You’ll know what I mean when they get back
A word for every occasion, you’ll use them too

They announced this epic plan one Ni
After a night of “spirited” relaxation
Bicycle around Australia -Matt, Tom and Meriki ?
I dismissed it as a dream - with little hesitation

The sponsors slowly gathered
Toyota leading the way
Realising the cause mattered
To make a better world for another day

Kathmandu, Origin, Harvey Norman, Vibe
Have also done their bit
To keep their massive dream alive
To complete their year long trip

Uni of New South Wales would also document
Their journey of discovery and learrnng
What it is about, what it meant
Education and mass action the yearning

Encouragement from Wayne at Sold Out
Was so vital to the cause
They knew what they were on about
Helped overcome a pregnant pause

Carbon Planet were not to be left out
They quickly joined the cause
Knew what this stuff was all about
Wanted to help the boys make the issue yours

That leaves Australian Traveller Magazine
Support in every mag they wrote
Helped keep the Boys focused and keen
And gave an opportunity to “big note”

Fresh news has just been noted
Of a great Environment Award win
$2000 winners they have been voted
By Telstra and Channel Ten

Their journey is almost over
But their cause has just begun
All’s not yet in clover
There’s still lots of work to be done

More power to MyPower
That’s what I have to say
Stronger with evry hour
More committed every day

So lets all rally round and welcome them
Sponsors, supporters friends and Fam
These boys that have become men
December 7 at the Park, Dunningham

Ross Coggan

Quote of the Day:
Moving on;
When we make a friend another friend has gone;
Should a woman's kindly face
Make us welcome for a space,
Then it's boot and saddle, boys, we're
Moving on.

(Excerpt from “Banjo” Patterson's poem, “Moving On” )
