29th November - TEA GARDENS

Dreams at work

It started as a dream and became as an adventure. Later referred to as the MyPOWER Tour, that label also became an evolutionary loss as the “tour” became more of a “lifestyle” than anything else. Now, perhaps in its final evolutionary form, MyPOWER is work. And I don’t mean the 9-5 type of job, I mean from 5am when Tom’s business day begins to 4am when Matt’s overtime shift ends. But nobody is complaining, because we have the best job in the world.

Today we ride from Forster to Tea Gardens. It is a tough day, and our last ride of over 100km. Ever. We also bid farewell to the dangerous Pacific Highway in favour of a series of winding coastal roads adjoined by ferries. Although the ride is hard, it is our equivalent of a typical lunch break, that happens to be very physically demanding and spans 5 hours. But nobody is complaining, because we have the longest and most scenic lunch break in the world.

Back on the topic of work, we are still preparing for celebrations and adjustment to normal life. I tell my cousin Ross that we might spend a night in Sydney revisiting where it all began: the Rose Hotel in Glebe. Then I give him a list of details for the event:
·         One should enjoy a Black Wattle beer;
·         Do not bring, or even touch a pen at this venue. Sign nothing;
·         Exit the facility immediately if one sees a diary, or anything that can be written on;
·         Conversation should be superficial, never to be taken seriously.

I simply don’t want to be held responsible for my cousin getting dragged into another continental circumnavigation by bike, like perhaps from Alaska to Baja California, or a short trip from Byron to Cape York in a hobcat sailing craft, or some Godforsaken mountain climb. All of the above have been mentioned as part of future dreaming, as well as sailing homemade bamboo rafts, boat making in the Greek Isles, paid employment in Antarctica, and the creation of more school and community gardens in the Sutherland Shire (just like the ones photographed here in Foster). Who knows what the future will hold?

Quote of the Day
“Everything begins as a dream and evolves into work, so the most important task you can undertake while at work is to dream up your next adventure.” – MyPOWER
